The Flesch reading ease was developed by Rudolf Flesch and uses the below formula based on total word, sentence, and syllable counts in a text to calculate readability.

206.8351.015(total wordstotal sentences)84.6(total syllablestotal words)206.835 - 1.015\left( \frac{\text{total words}}{\text{total sentences}}\right) - 84.6\left(\frac{\text{total syllables}}{\text{total words}}\right)

Flesch reading ease scores correspond to roughly the below grade levels. Unlike some other readability formulas, the Flesh reading ease scale is descending, meaning a lower score corresponds to higher difficulty.
